Santa Cruz Organic Root Beer

Santa Cruz Organic Root Beer

Here's another elixir I found perusing the "organic" aisle of a Shop Rite Supermarket. The fact that this sports the "organic" label as opposed to the "natural" label makes me wonder if they are truly going through the rigors of getting organic qualifications or is it just marketing hype since everyone and their monther are trying to make something or other organic these days.

In any case, it doesn't really matter since this stuff is pretty horrible. First things first, it's clear. Now, I've had clear (often called "white") birch beer, but never a clear root beer. That being said I was willing to give it a chance anyway. Meh . . . maybe on a really bad day when I haven't had a root beer in about 3 years so I've forgotten what root beer tastes like might I mistake this for root beer. As it stands it's just a sweet, somewhat fruity mess of flavors with slight carbonation. I can taste next to no rooty flavor in this and no bite whatsoever. Hippies and health nuts might like it since it has a pretty light flavor overall and it's USDA labelled "organic", but if you're at all into root beer; avoid like the plague!

Sweetened With: "organic evaporated cane juice"

Verdict: Not worth your time

Goose Island Root Beer

Goose Island Root Beer

This root beer I've only been able to find in Target stores, but, unlike the Archer Farms label, this isn't owned by Target. So I guess it's just good taste that Target chooses to carry this brew.

Definitely has a good amount of rooty flavor and is pretty sweet. Also forms a decent head and is somewhat creamy with a hint of vanilla. Only drawback is that it has very little bite. I like my root beers with bite.

Sweetened With: "sugar"

Verdict: worth a bottle or two
